What types of rust are there?
Pitting and cavity corrosion
Pitting and cavity corrosion form on unprotected steel, specifically steel used in infrastructure. When this rust pits it breaks down metal, deteriorating both thickness and strength. It can create damage in two ways: narrow and deep, or wide and shallow. Contact corrosion, aka Galvanic Corrosion
Contact corrosion forms when a metal of one type comes into contact with a vastly different type of metal. This difference in the chemical composition of the metals causes electrons to flow between the metals. Brown rust is caused by the combination of high oxygen and low moisture. However, it can also be caused by contamination during manufacturing stages like cleaning, fabrication, treating, or machining.
Black rust is caused by oxidation and low moisture. This rust appears in a think film, affecting covered metals that have limited oxygen such as tools or equipment stored in sheds.
Why are farms and ranches so susceptible to rust?

As you can see from the types of rust discussed above, moisture and oxygen are the two primary culprits of rust.
